It is almost 30 days since you’ve made your New Year resolution.

Hehe – Who are you kidding? More than half of you decided not to make a New Year resolution 😏😏. Research said that only 16% of people usually carry through with this promise anyway. But look who’s talking?

In 2022, I decided that I would walk or run a mile for five days of the week on a treadmill. In fact, I moved the treadmill into my living room, in front of my television. On the first Sunday of the month, I walked a 1 mile – Yay! By Tuesday, there was no stopping this champion, I not only walked but ran the mile and a half.

Way to go Mello!

Wednesday, I sat on the sofa and watched the treadmill looking right at me. I even went as far as holding a conversation with the thing; “everything in moderation Mr. Treadmill, tomorrow is another day!” But for me and Mr. Treadmill, “tomorrow” never came. The treadmill has been sitting there ever since.

Why bother to psych yourself up, only to face disappointment? Experience sure has taught you wisdom, hasn’t it? Lol! I’m truly laughing at you, nay – at us. Why? Because we are wrong!

It is not that we’ve always failed to carry out our resolutions, but that we try to do it by ourselves. It is natural for us, as human beings, to come up with plans, thoughts, and goals for the future. But we need to realize that God is the only one who truly knows what’s best for us.

When you have plans you would like to make, or actions you need to take about a particular decision, make sure that you go to God first. God’s plans will always outlive any plan we come up with for ourselves.

You might say God has no interest in your meatless, sugarless, low carb diet, or your exercise and weight plans, or your monthly savings, but He does!

One of my all time, go to, favorite texts is proof of this. Jeremiah 29 verse, says

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

One of my favorite speakers, this weekend, made me think deeply about my undeclared 2023 New Year resolution. He admitted that we are just too quick to give up. The resolutions you made in previous years didn’t work out, so you are quick to give up. Thinking it’s impossible, and resolutions are pointless.

Giving up should never be an option. God wants us to keep on striving, keep on trying, and to keep moving on; trying to reach our goal. Never give up. We just need to stay focused, and secondly, we must press on.

Paul says;

“Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you.”

Philippians 3: 13 -15

Blogger, Mary Fairchild, in her May 06, 2021 post elaborated on this scripture nicely. She said, “Paul is laser-focused on the race, the goal, and the finish line of his journey of faith. Like an Olympian runner, he does not turn back to dwell on his failures. Forgetting what is behind, Paul looks forward resolutely toward the final victory lap when he will see the face of Jesus Christ”.

It’s never too late to hop back on to that treadmill and run towards the goal (literally in my case) for the prize. Whatever that prize might be.

If you must give up, then give up on giving up.

  1. In all we do in all we say we have to give up on giving up,only that achievement would make it all possible.Use Christ example he never gave up.

  2. Great words of encouragement. Quitting is a word that doesn’t exist in my vocabulary. It was Jesus who declared, no one who puts his hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom 🙏I really do not find myself making New year’s Resolutions . Simple put . I don’t want to fool myself.I stand on the principle of , let my yea be yea, and my nay be nay.

  3. New Years Resolutions most of us make make them
every year but as Mel says how far do we go in the year before you know it we fail to carry out our resolutions
I am conscious of that myself when the present year is coming to an end I start. making plans for the upcoming year but before you know it as the year progresses those plans fail may God help me stop depending on self and leave all my plans into his hands 🙏🙏
