I found myself justifying an action that was not necessarily godly. I rationalized it for minutes. I even found myself saying out loud, “Surely you understand Lord”. That’s when it hit me folks; I was trying to negotiate with God, and I became thoroughly ashamed of myself. You see why, right?

I was asking the Lord to understand an action that He wouldn’t sanction. There I was, setting the terms for the Lord of Lords. This creature was telling her creator to change who He is, to accommodate and adhere to her rationality. I had to quickly pray for forgiveness.

Have you ever been in such a position where you tried to tell God to understand? Have you ever been at a place where you find yourself doing things that were convenient for you and your circumstances, yet you know very well that they were not sanctioned by God?  Have you ever gone as far as telling Him that He should meet you half way? You’ve probably said things such as;

  • “Lord, I did xyz, so cut me some slack.”
  • “God, you know that I cannot do without it, so surely you understand.”
  • “Lord, you are a God who is merciful and who loves to see people happy, you know this makes me happy, surely you will wink at my ignorance.”
  • “Lord, she is not a Christian, but she believes in you, so bless our marriage.”

Ha-ha…there is no such thing as half sin, or half obedience. God cannot change who He is to accommodate our wants. We cannot treat God as if He is our equal, parents, teacher, or boss. He is God Almighty. There is no ‘cut corners’ with him. It is either total obedience or not at all. We cannot expect Him to excuse our willful wrongs, because Divine Grace does not cover intentional sins.

If your actions are contrary to biblical principles, then DO NOT DO IT! God cannot understand, excuse, or support sin. It is unlike Him because He is Holy and Righteous. He will not change in order to accommodate or accept human standard.

The laws of nature, biology, and physics attest to the fact that there are fundamental principles that governs life. Altering the principles of nature can have negative effect on those around us. The same argument holds true, that God cannot change the laws that are the foundational principles of his government. Pretending we can change God or His Word to fit our preferences is a dangerous idea and only leads to destruction.
