This week I came across and dwelled on Proverbs 31. Every woman should know that passage of scripture. It speaks of a kind of mother, wife or woman, who makes some of us look like we’re not even trying. She’s the kind of woman many Christian women covet, and have been jealous of.

There are many who are not just intimidated by the Proverbs 31 woman, but many feel defeated by this woman whose life seems full of praises.

I confess that there was a time when I thought this perfect, never tiring, domestic goddess who lives in Proverbs 31 sounds nothing at all like me. After all, my child isn’t clothed in scarlet—unless there’s a sale at JCPenney and Children Place on red children’s clothing. And call me lazy, but my lamp definitely goes out at night.

Husbands like to compare their wives to her. Some use the Proverbs 31 woman as a weapon and nuisance against their brides.

Whatever you think of her, I have such admiration for her;  she’s  my role model.

Well, on this special day that many celebrate as Mother’s Day, I want to celebrate you too! You are the Proverbs 31 woman. I see her in you and I want you to see yourself in her too.

You and I can identify with her. Often times the celebration and praise is given to the woman, mother, or wife with a spotless house. We look at the woman with perfectly behaved children wearing matching, designer outfits.

There are certain praises given her that you and I can take pleasure in owning, because we have been and are that woman.

It’s a chapter about a woman of valor. A courageous woman. A woman of strength and dignity. That’s you! ☺️

We might lack some of the things the Proverb 31 woman does, but we have moments to celebrate as we can seek to climb up a little higher in our womanhood.  We’ll get there, we’re working on it, but while we work with the Holy Spirit on this, we still have much to celebrate with this woman.

As I examine Proverb 31, my head tilts with pride as I identify myself in her. She is a woman, mother and wife who fears the Lord. This isn’t an “I’m afraid of God” kind of fear. This type of fear refers to having a heart completely in awe of God. It describes a woman who honors God by seeking Him in everything she does and trusting Him wholeheartedly with her life. She has a heart of reverence that overflows into a life of spiritual maturity and wisdom.

Hey- that’s you and Me!

Our Proverbs 31 woman is a personification of wisdom that demonstrates what wisdom looks like in action. She is a woman of valor who embodies the book of Proverbs’s key theme, the fear of the Lord. She is wise, strong, fearless, purposeful, and compassionate. She is the ultimate “it” girl, not because of how she looks or what she wears, but because she pours selflessly into everything and everyone God puts before her to serve.

Mothers, ladies, wife can you not see yourself in her?  Men, don’t you know a woman like this; your wife, your mother, your sister, a female friend?

Let’s look a little deeper…

  • Works hard: She does not generate wealth through exploitation but through diligent hard work. She works with willing hands, plants a vineyard, and makes her arms strong.
  • Clothed with strength and dignity: She can laugh at the days to come.
  • Speaks with wisdom: Faithful instruction is on her tongue.
  • Watches over the affairs of her household: She does not eat the bread of idleness.
  • Woman of courage: She knows what she can control and courageously trusts god with what she cannot.
  • Values-driven woman: She speaks with knowledge and understanding.

The Proverbs 31 woman passage provides wisdom on how to live a godly life. She carefully cultivates a godly life on the eternal truth of God and not the temporary and fleeting distractions of this world.

To my Christian mothers and wives in Melody’s nugget land, today, I say to you, take God at His Word and choose to believe that the woman of Proverbs 31 holds good and pleasant things for us. 🥰

Let’s challenge ourselves to look at Proverbs 31 closely — to see which part of it is a gift to us and which verses we need to learn from. Let’s speak these words over ourselves and the other women in our lives as a form of celebration instead of condemnation.

Hey you, yes you- 👉🏽 the Proverbs 31 Woman who is reading this,
