After a long day at work, I sat at the traffic light staring into the distance asking self, “Girl Melody, when will you stop working?”

I knew retirement wasn’t the answer, I’m a long way from such luxury. Winning the lottery is an even farther possibility as I have never bought nor am I willing to buy a ticket.

If the impatient driver behind my car didn’t start honking, I would have probably gotten my answer to a genuine question. As I drove on and admired the sunset in it’s beauty, an ahah moment descended on me, and I, in my mind, saw heaven’s gates opened, golden beams of rays bursted out, and a heavenly host belted out a sweet crescendo Melody.

In that moment, I felt revived by the most comforting thought, “Girl Melody, hang tight, you won’t have to work when you get to heaven, aka new Jerusalem”. You should have seen the smile on my face as my mind started to run a mile an hour. As I drove on with an extra pep on the gas pedal, I started to flip the pages of the Bible in hopes of finding a text to support my celebrating mind . I quickly stopped at Revelation 14:13, “They will rest from their labor.” and if I wasn’t driving, I would have busted out the famous Carlton dance from an all time favorite TV show; Fresh Prince of Bellaire.

The excitement grew like wild fire on a dry California hillside when I remembered phrases such as – “In heaven, there will be no night, no pain, no sickness, NO WORK” -can I get an Amen, Hallelujah!

But as the car rolled to a stop at another traffic light, so did the smile on my face. I wrestled with a most uninvited recollection that forced itself on me. “Girl Melody, didn’t you read somewhere that there will infact be plenty work in heaven? Brake! Say what now? I couldn’t wait to get home so I could do some research, because my inflated head, hope, and excitement started to deflate pretty fast.

Sure enough…. The Bible verse that troubled me for about 10 minutes was Isaiah 65:17-22. “I will create new heavens and a new earth….They will build houses and dwell in them; they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.”

Ok, before your hope of an infinite vacation from work in heaven gets deflated too, hear the good news. The party is just getting started-Yes there will be work, but it won’t be laborious and toilsome. It will be the kind of work that will be restful, enjoyable, meaningful. The ultimate dream job.

The thing is, before the Fall, work was enjoyable, not toilsome. Therefore, in the earth renewed, work will no longer be cursed but will return to its Edenic perfection. Work in Heaven is something to look forward to, not to dread. Shall we be co-workers together?

Til then, I eagerly await my promotion…

  1. I’ve read in the Bible that, by the sweat of your brow you eat bread. The declaration was pronounced on our fore parents after the fall. Now mind you. There are lots of Thorns and Thistles in the way, and by the time we’re finished cutting through those we are tired. I can’t wait to walk those streets of the new Jerusalem!!! Yes indeed! We will work and never get tired. No night there. Jesus himself is the Light. That Light will outshine the sun. Darkness will be dispels.Hallelujah!!! Come Lord Jesus quickly come🙏

  2. …so happy to know that you’re looking forward to the great day of the coming of Jesus to inherit place He’s prepared for us! What a blessed Hope is ours, to God be the Glory great things He continues to do! I too am looking forward to being there with my family members especially my children! The enemy is going about like a roaring Lion after the young people, let’s keep them before the throne in prayer 🙏🙏🙏

  3. Real food for thought.
Long before we were created God has been at work for us shaping us molding into his likeness and we have some work to do in his vineyard here on earth once we are faithful and inherit eternal life we surely will work in our vineyards where we plant and reap the best fruits ever.
Brethren let us be faithful there is work for us to do 🙏🙏
